Custom Design Begins Where Standard Solutions End
Every Detail Has a Purpose
One of the things we love most about residential design is creating custom furniture and millwork solutions that solve practical challenges while elevating the architecture of a home. The most successful pieces do more than provide storage—they create balance, establish rhythm, and become part of the architectural language of the space.
This dining room presented exactly that kind of opportunity.
The original opening to the room featured an arched threshold. While graceful in its time, the arch felt disconnected from the more tailored architectural direction we envisioned for the home. Repeating the half-round opening would have consumed valuable volume within the cabinetry and limited both storage and display opportunities.
Instead, we made the decision to square off the room opening and create a cleaner architectural framework. But rather than abandoning the curve entirely, we thoughtfully reinterpreted it.
The gentle arch was carried into the custom cabinetry itself, becoming the defining feature of the design. The curved glass display doors introduce softness and elegance while creating a direct dialogue with the home's original architecture. The result feels intentional rather than nostalgic—a contemporary interpretation of a traditional form.
Equally important was achieving visual balance.
To frame the central display cabinets, we designed concealed storage towers on either side. What appears to be decorative paneling on the left side actually conceals a hidden push-to-open cabinet designed specifically for vertical platter storage. This solution allowed us to maximize functionality without disrupting the symmetry of the composition.
These hidden moments are often our favorite. They transform overlooked spaces into highly useful storage while maintaining a calm and refined appearance. Every inch works harder, yet the room feels effortless.
The finished piece serves multiple purposes at once: it displays treasured collections, provides practical storage, strengthens the architecture of the room, and creates a focal point for the dining space. Most importantly, it demonstrates our belief that custom design should never be about decoration alone. It should solve problems, improve how a home functions, and create something uniquely suited to the people who live there.
The best custom pieces are not simply furniture. They become part of the architecture itself.
